When little Ryan became sick, his family had no idea that what first looked like an ordinary childhood illness would soon become a fight for his life. ๐
Ryan was just one year old and had always been a happy, energetic little boy.
Then, in December, everything changed.
๐ค๐ IT STARTED LIKE A COMMON ILLNESS
At first, Ryan developed a runny nose and symptoms that seemed similar to a cold.
But soon, his condition became much more serious.
His fever became extremely high.
He became unusually sleepy and lethargic.
He refused to walk.
And most frightening of all, he simply wasn’t acting like himself. ๐ข
His mother, Jessica, knew something was terribly wrong.
Ryan developed a rash, his heart rate increased, and he needed oxygen.
Despite several hospital visits, his condition continued to deteriorate. ๐ฅ๐
โ๏ธ๐ THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED
Ryan and Jessica were urgently flown from Broken Hill to Adelaide so he could receive specialist medical care.
But shortly after arriving, Ryan suffered a cardiac arrest.
His heart stopped for approximately 10 minutes. ๐ญ
Doctors told his family that they didn’t believe he would survive.
But his medical team continued performing CPR.
And somehow, after those terrifying minutes, Ryan’s heart started beating again. โค๏ธโ๐ฉน๐
He had survived.
But the fight was far from over.
๐ฆ ๐ SEPSIS HAD DEVASTATED HIS LITTLE BODY
Doctors confirmed that Ryan was suffering from septic shock, one of the most serious complications of an infection.
Although doctors were able to save his life, the infection had severely damaged blood flow to his limbs.
To save him, surgeons had to perform multiple amputations. ๐ฅโค๏ธโ๐ฉน
Ryan lost both legs below the knees, all of his fingertips, and several fingers.
Before he had even celebrated his second birthday, his life had changed forever. ๐
But Ryan was still here.
And that meant there was still hope. ๐
๐ก๐ FOUR MONTHS LATER, HE FINALLY WENT HOME
Ryan spent approximately four months in the hospital before he was finally able to return home to his family.
After months surrounded by doctors, nurses, surgeries and rehabilitation, being home was an enormous milestone. ๐ฅน๐ก
His mother says the support they received from relatives, friends and even complete strangers helped them through some of the darkest moments of their lives. โค๏ธ
But going home didn’t mean the journey was over.
It was only the beginning of a new chapter.
๐ฆฟ๐ช LEARNING TO WALK AGAIN
More than a year later, Ryan continues to travel back to Adelaide every few months for medical appointments, surgeries, physiotherapy and prosthetic fittings.
And one of his family’s proudest moments has been watching him take his first steps with prosthetic legs and a walker. ๐ฅน๐ฃ๐

A little boy who once came terrifyingly close to losing his life was now standing again.
Moving again.

Ryan’s body has been through more than most children could ever imagine.

After everything Ryan experienced, Jessica has become pแดssionate about raising awareness of sepsis.
She now works with Sepsis Australia to help other families recognize how quickly an infection can become dangerous.
Her message is simple:
Trust your instincts when something doesn’t seem right.
Sepsis can happen to anyone, and an infection that initially appears ordinary can sometimes become life-threatening.
Recognizing it early and seeking urgent medical attention can make a crucial difference. ๐๐
๐๐ฃ ONE STEP AT A TIME
Ryan’s story is heartbreaking.
