Nuala’s Rare Eye Cancer Journey: From a Red Eye to a Life-Saving Diagnosis

At just 9 months old, Nuala’s eye suddenly became red. Her mother was initially told it could be a harmless burst blood vessel, but the situation soon changed as the eye began to bulge and alter in shape.

Doctors eventually discovered that Nuala had alveolar soft part sarcoma, an extremely rare tumor located behind her eye.

After surgery, cancer cells remained, and shortly after her first birthday, doctors made the difficult decision to remove her left eye to give her the best possible chance of a healthy future. 💔

Months later came a moment her family had been waiting for — Nuala rang the hospital’s end-of-treatment bell, marking the end of an incredibly difficult chapter. 🔔❤️

Specialists then used MRI scans, CT images and pH๏τographs to create a custom prosthetic eye without requiring an invasive mould.

By 20 months old, Nuala was attending nursery, learning to walk and adapting bravely to life with sight in one eye. 🥹✨

Her journey shows how something that initially seemed minor can sometimes lead doctors toward an important diagnosis — and how much strength a child can show through an extraordinary medical journey.
