For months Jamie Varley’s social media feed told a story of domestic contentment and new parenthood. Followers saw carefully staged pH๏τographs of a tidy home in Blackpool, a successful teaching career, a much-loved dog, and the joyful integration of a baby into the household. There were images from a “Chosen Shower” party and a mural painted with the name the couple had chosen for their adopted son. Varley and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley appeared to be living the family life they had wanted since meeting in Manchester in 2018. That carefully managed image was destroyed in an eight-week trial that ended with Varley receiving a whole-life prison sentence for the murder of 13-month-old Preston Davey.

Preston had entered the care system almost immediately after his birth on 16 June 2022. His mother, Sarah Davey, carried a previous conviction for murder committed in her teens. After several months with foster carers the child was placed with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley in April 2023. The couple had completed the adoption process and Varley arranged time away from his role as a teacher and head of year at South Shore Academy, a position that also involved safeguarding responsibilities. McGowan-Fazakerley worked in finance.

In the months that followed, Preston suffered what prosecutors described as unremitting abuse. On 27 July 2023 Varley arrived at hospital with the child in cardiac arrest and claimed an accidental drowning in the bath. Medical staff observed that the baby was dry and showed no signs of having been submerged. A detailed post-mortem examination found approximately 40 injuries and ruled out drowning as the cause of death. Experts concluded the evidence pointed to deliberate airway obstruction.

At trial the jury rejected Varley’s version of events. He was convicted of murder together with multiple counts of Sєxual ᴀssault, child cruelty, grievous bodily harm and the creation and distribution of indecent images. McGowan-Fazakerley was found guilty of allowing the child’s death, child cruelty and Sєxual ᴀssault. Sentencing on 18 June 2026, Mr Justice Turner told Varley the case was of the utmost gravity and that a whole-life order was required. The former teacher was informed he would never be released. His partner was sentenced to 25 years.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows later remarked on the gulf between the couple’s public presentation and the private reality. Social media showed only the perfect surface, he said, while the truth inside the home was entirely different. The convictions and sentences have been widely viewed as a necessary measure of justice for a child who was failed by those trusted to care for him. Reviews of the adoption process continue. The permanent record of the case remains one of the most serious examples of abuse of trust in recent British criminal history, ending with a sentence that ensures Jamie Varley will never leave prison.
