Gerry McCann Says Years of Media Pressure Took a “Huge Toll” on His Family as Madeleine Case Remains Unresolved

Nearly two decades after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, her father, Gerry McCann, has spoken about the devastating impact that years of intense media coverage had on his family, saying they were subjected to relentless scrutiny and misleading reporting during the early stages of the investigation.
Madeleine was nearly four years old when she disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007. Despite an international investigation involving authorities in Portugal, Britain and Germany, her whereabouts have never been established.
In a rare interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Gerry McCann said the family had experienced an extraordinary level of press attention after Madeleine vanished. He described periods when journalists repeatedly appeared outside the family’s home and pH๏τographers approached their vehicle, experiences that he said were particularly frightening for Madeleine’s younger twin siblings.

McCann said the sustained coverage had left him feeling overwhelmed and trapped, arguing that sections of the British press had repeatedly interfered with the investigation through inaccurate or misleading reporting. He said his family ultimately had to take legal action to try to stop some of the coverage.
His comments also renewed his call for greater scrutiny of the British media and for the second phase of the Leveson Inquiry to be resumed. McCann is among more than 30 people who signed a letter calling on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to reconsider the decision to abandon the planned second stage of the inquiry, which was intended to examine issues including unlawful conduct by the press and relationships between journalists, politicians and police.
The issue remains particularly personal for the McCann family because media attention surrounding Madeleine’s disappearance has continued for years. Gerry and Kate McCann themselves were once treated as suspects by Portuguese authorities, although they were later cleared and have consistently denied involvement in their daughter’s disappearance.

Gerry also addressed the continued uncertainty surrounding Madeleine’s fate. After 19 years without a definitive answer, he acknowledged that the possibility she may have died cannot be ignored. At the same time, he stressed that there is still no evidence publicly establishing that she is ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.
He said his hope of finding Madeleine alive has become increasingly small with the pᴀssage of time, but that it has not disappeared completely. For him and Kate, the priority remains discovering what happened to their daughter and ensuring that whoever was responsible is held accountable.
The family has continued to support efforts to establish what happened despite the enormous amount of speculation that has surrounded the case. Their official website said in December 2025 that the investigation remained ongoing and that the search for knowledge and justice was “far from over.”
The case has also continued to generate controversy over the way Madeleine’s disappearance is covered by the media. In 2026, the McCanns criticized a Channel 5 drama about the case, saying they had not been consulted and had no involvement in its production. They said such programmes could have a negative impact on the family.

Another recent development involved Julia Wandelt, a Polish woman who publicly claimed to be Madeleine. Wandelt was later convicted at Leicester Crown Court of harᴀssing Gerry and Kate McCann, although she was found not guilty of stalking. Gerry suggested that sections of the media had helped amplify her claims, arguing that some outlets benefited from the attention surrounding her story.
Meanwhile, the investigation itself remains active. German authorities have continued to regard Christian Brückner as the principal suspect in the case, although he has never been charged with Madeleine’s disappearance and has denied involvement. Recent reporting has continued to follow his movements and legal status after his release from prison in Germany in 2025.
The McCann family has also recently experienced a very different kind of public attention. Madeleine’s younger brother Sean, who was only two years old when his sister disappeared, represented Scotland at the 2026 Commonwealth Games as a swimmer. Kate and Gerry were present to support him, marking an important family moment nearly two decades after Madeleine’s disappearance.

For Gerry McCann, however, the central question has never changed.
Madeleine disappeared in 2007, and despite years of investigations, searches, suspected leads and international media coverage, there has still been no definitive explanation of what happened to her.
The family continues to live with that uncertainty.
Gerry has acknowledged that the hope of finding his daughter alive is now slim, but he has made clear that he does not consider the search over. Until investigators establish what happened to Madeleine, he says, the family will continue to seek answers.
After nearly two decades, the disappearance remains one of Britain’s most enduring missing-person cases — and for the McCanns, it remains not simply a famous investigation, but the unresolved disappearance of their daughter.
