💙 From College Move-In to a Hospital Room: 18-Year-Old Eli Rivera Begins a Fight for His Future

Next week was supposed to mark one of the biggest milestones of 18-year-old Eli Rivera’s life.

He was supposed to be packing his belongings, saying goodbye to familiar surroundings and moving into his college dorm in preparation for a new chapter at Texas A&M–Kingsville.

Instead, Eli is preparing for something entirely different.

The recent high school graduate is now in San Antonio, Texas, receiving treatment at Methodist Hospital after doctors diagnosed him with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL.

The diagnosis came after Eli began feeling sick about a month ago. At first, his family had no idea that the symptoms would lead to news capable of changing the direction of his entire life.

Suddenly, plans that had seemed certain were placed on hold.

Eli had been preparing to study Civil Engineering at Texas A&M–Kingsville. Like many teenagers his age, he was looking forward to a dorm room, new friends, college classes and the independence that comes with starting adulthood. 🎓

He also loves football and soccer.

Those dreams have not disappeared.

They have simply been interrupted.

Eli’s uncle, Juan, reached out asking people to surround his nephew with prayers and encouragement as he begins treatment.

Across Texas, families are preparing their children for college. Parents are helping load cars, shopping for dorm essentials and taking pH๏τographs before their teenagers begin the next chapter of their lives.

Eli and his family were supposed to be doing the same.

Instead, they are learning about leukemia, treatment and hospital stays while an 18-year-old prepares for a fight he never expected.

Yet his family wants people to understand that they are not giving up on the future Eli had planned.

They still picture him walking onto the Texas A&M–Kingsville campus. They still see him studying Civil Engineering, making new friends, playing the sports he loves and eventually experiencing the college life he had been preparing for.
