🎒💔 Will Roberts’ First Day of High School Becomes a Heartbreaking Milestone for His Family
For many families, the first day of high school is filled with excitement, pH๏τographs, nervous smiles and memories that will be cherished for years.
For the Roberts family, this year’s milestone brought something very different.
Will Roberts, a 15-year-old cancer warrior who pᴀssed away last month, was supposed to begin high school today. Instead, his mother, Brittney Roberts, visited his grave after dropping off his younger sister, Charlie, for her first day of 7th grade.
The morning was supposed to look completely different.
Brittney shared a pH๏τograph from Will’s grave and described the moment she had imagined having with both of her children.
“I should have been taking pictures of BOTH of my kids this morning,” she wrote.
She imagined Will complaining about the pH๏τographs, Charlie laughing and herself calling for both children to hurry up.
It would have been an ordinary family morning.
Instead, Charlie began 7th grade without the older brother who was supposed to be growing up alongside her.
After dropping Charlie off at school, Brittney went to visit Will.
“That one hurts,” she wrote.
Her words captured something many grieving families understand all too well: loss does not simply disappear after a funeral.
Grief can return unexpectedly through milestones that were supposed to be shared with someone who is no longer there.
A first day of school.
A birthday.
A holiday.
A graduation.
Even an ordinary morning can suddenly become a painful reminder of the person who should have been there.
For Charlie, this was supposed to be the beginning of another school year with her big brother nearby. Instead, she is continuing to grow up while carrying his memory with her.
Brittney expressed the heartbreak of watching her daughter experience these milestones without Will.
“Charlie is still growing up and having all these firsts without the big brother who was supposed to be growing up right beside her,” she wrote.
Many people had followed Will’s cancer journey and supported the family with prayers and encouragement during his illness. His story touched thousands of people, and many stood alongside the Roberts family when they had to say goodbye to him at just 15 years old.
Now, another difficult chapter has arrived.
Will’s absence is being felt not only through memories of his illness, but through the future moments he was supposed to experience.
His first day of high school was supposed to be one of those moments.
Instead, his family marked the day at his resting place.
Brittney ended her message with words directed toward both of her children:
“Happy first day of 7th grade, Charlie.
And happy first day of high school, Will.” 🕊️
Those simple words carry the weight of everything the family has lost—and everything they continue to carry forward.
For Charlie, there will be more firsts ahead. More birthdays, school years, accomplishments and milestones.
Will will not physically be there for them, but his memory will remain part of his sister’s story.
For Brittney and everyone who loved Will, those future milestones may bring both pride and pain.
That is the complicated reality of grief: learning to celebrate the moments that continue while missing the person who should have been there to experience them.
As the Roberts family continues through these difficult milestones, friends, supporters and those who followed Will’s journey are being asked to keep them in their prayers. 🙏💙
For those who have previously asked how they can honor Will’s memory, his family has encouraged people who want to help to support his church.
Today, however, the most important message is simply one of remembrance.
Will should have been starting high school. His sister should have had her big brother beside her. His mother should have been taking pictures of both her children.
Instead, the family is learning how to carry Will with them into every milestone still to come.
🎒 Happy first day of high school, Will. You are still loved, still remembered and deeply missed. 🕊️💙
