What began as what seemed like a minor eye infection became a devastating medical journey for little Juwan.

In August 2024, when he was just 16 months old, the Namibian toddler developed redness and irritation in his left eye. His parents initially believed it was a routine infection and treated him with antibiotic eye drops.

But his condition quickly became much more serious.

Doctors eventually discovered that Juwan had contracted HSV-1, the virus commonly ᴀssociated with cold sores, in his eye.

Because both of his parents tested negative for the virus, doctors believed it was most likely transmitted through contact with someone who had an active cold sore — potentially through a kiss or by touching the affected area and then coming into contact with Juwan’s eye.

The infection caused severe damage to his cornea.

A small opening developed in the cornea, and the eye became extremely dry and vulnerable to further complications. Over time, Juwan lost vision in the affected eye.

His family refused to stop searching for ways to protect what remained of his eye.

They traveled to Cape Town to seek specialized medical care, where Juwan underwent an amniotic membrane graft procedure. His eyelids were temporarily closed as part of efforts to protect the eye and support healing.

Additional procedures may be needed as doctors continue working toward preserving the eye and exploring whether some visual function could eventually be restored.

For Juwan’s mother, Michelle Saaiman, the experience has been heartbreaking — but she has chosen to share her son’s story in the hope that other families can learn from it. 💙

Her message is simple:

Please don’t kiss babies or young children when you have a cold sore or any active mouth infection.

HSV-1 is extremely common, and many adults may carry the virus without realizing it. While it is usually ᴀssociated with cold sores, transmission to a young child can occasionally lead to serious complications.

Juwan’s story is a powerful reminder that something adults may consider a harmless expression of affection can carry unexpected risks for vulnerable babies and toddlers.

A gentle smile, a wave or a kiss blown from a distance can still show love. 💕👶

For Juwan and his family, awareness has become part of their journey.

They hope that by telling his story, other parents will recognize the importance of taking precautions around newborns and young children — especially when someone has an active cold sore.
