NEW YORK CITY — Four years after the tragic loss of 20-year-old Azsia Johnson, her family is still living with the pain of losing a young mother whose life was defined by love for her children, determination to escape abuse, and dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse.

Azsia’s story came to a devastating turning point on June 29, 2022, when she was walking with her three-month-old daughter on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. According to prosecutors, her estranged boyfriend, Isaac Argro, confronted her during the encounter. Authorities said Azsia was fatally sh○t.

For her family, however, the tragedy did not begin that morning.

Azsia’s mother, Lisa DeSort, has described years of fear, harᴀssment, and abuse that her daughter experienced during her relationship with Argro. At one point, Azsia sought refuge at a domestic violence shelter in East Harlem with her children, attempting to create a safer environment for her family.

Despite the challenges, relatives say Azsia continued trying to protect her children and maintain a stable future. She dreamed of becoming a pediatric nurse and was remembered as someone who genuinely loved children and wanted to care for others.

Her family says she also hoped to establish a healthy co-parenting relationship for the sake of her young daughter.

Instead, her life ended in a tragedy that left her family devastated.

For nearly four years, the Johnson family waited for the criminal case to reach its conclusion. On May 30, 2026, a Manhattan jury found Argro guilty of m□rder following a trial that brought painful memories back to the family.

Azsia’s mother described the courtroom experience as a mixture of relief, anger, and overwhelming grief. Family members said they were particularly disturbed by what they perceived as a lack of remorse from Argro during the proceedings.

For Lisa DeSort, the verdict represented accountability, but it could never restore the daughter she lost.
