The father of the teenager responsible for the 2024 mᴀss shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia has been sentenced for his role in one of the nation’s most devastating school tragedies.

On July 30, Colin Gray was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of murder and involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting carried out by his son, Colt Gray. Prosecutors argued that Colin provided his teenage son with an AR-15-style rifle despite clear warning signs that the boy’s mental health had been deteriorating.

The tragedy unfolded on Sept. 4, 2024, when 14-year-old Colt Gray opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killing four people and injuring several others.

The victims were identified as students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, along with teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie.

Earlier this week, Colt Gray pleaded guilty to 55 criminal charges, including multiple counts of murder, and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

During Colin Gray’s trial, prosecutors argued that the shooting could have been prevented had the warning signs been taken more seriously. Colin acknowledged in court that he struggled to manage his son’s behavioral problems, saying there was “a whole other side” of Colt that he never fully understood.

Judge Nicholas Primm said Colin’s criminal responsibility was directly connected to the actions of his son, describing the father’s offenses as being “tethered” to the ᴅᴇᴀᴅly attack.

The emotional impact of the shooting continues to be felt by survivors and the families of those who were killed.

“You took away the innocence of so many kids in that classroom,” survivor Nautica Walton, who was injured during the attack, said in a victim impact statement. “Those things are never completely going to disappear.”

The case has drawn national attention because it marks one of the rare instances in which a parent has been held criminally responsible for providing a firearm to a child who later carried out a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly school shooting, highlighting ongoing debates over parental accountability, gun access, and youth mental health.
