What began as a cozy family evening around a backyard fire pit turned into a life-changing tragedy for 18-month-old Dusty McAuliffe—an accident her family hopes will help prevent other children from suffering the same fate. 💛

The McAuliffe family had gathered around their fire pit on their rural property in Chapman Valley, Western Australia, roasting marshmallows together before bedtime. As he always did, Dusty’s father, Anthony, removed the remaining wood and coals and thoroughly hosed down the fire pit before the family went inside. 🔥

The following afternoon, the children were happily playing outside when tragedy struck.

Dusty, who was walking with one of her older sisters, suddenly tripped and fell directly into the fire pit.

“I heard her crying but couldn’t see where she was,” her mother, Paige, recalled. “She had fallen into the fire pit and was sitting inside it. For a split second I froze, then I realized it might still be H๏τ. There was ash all over her.” 💔

Although the fire appeared to be out, hidden heat remained trapped beneath the ashes.

Paige, who was 38 weeks pregnant, immediately carried her daughter into a cold shower.

“I remember standing there, heavily pregnant, holding my little girl as her damaged skin came away,” she said. “It was overwhelming.” 🚿

While her husband called emergency services and tried to comfort their other children, Paige kept Dusty under cool running water until help arrived.

Living in a rural area meant waiting 26 minutes for an ambulance.

Dusty was then airlifted to Perth Children’s Hospital, where renowned burn specialist Dr. Fiona Wood and her team immediately began treating her injuries. ✈️🏥

Doctors found that Dusty had suffered third-degree burns to her right hand and second-degree burns to her left hand and forearm, with some injuries extending deep enough to affect the nerves.

Just days later, she underwent her first skin graft.

Nearly a year later, Dusty has undergone 17 skin graft surgeries, receiving new skin taken from her groin and legs as doctors continue rebuilding her growing hands. ❤️

Only three weeks after the accident, Paige gave birth to the couple’s fifth child.

Despite being in labor while Dusty remained hospitalized, she returned to the burns ward the very next day to be by her daughter’s side.

“It was a crazy time,” she said. “Dusty was still in the burns unit while I was giving birth, but I wanted to be back holding her hand as soon as I could.” 👶💕

Paige later shared their family’s story to raise awareness about burn first aid, explaining that she had recently learned from Tiny Hearts Education that burns should be cooled immediately under running water.

That knowledge helped her respond quickly when every second mattered.

Doctors later explained that although the fire pit had appeared extinguished, it had continued smoldering beneath the surface all day because its design trapped heat deep underground.

The family also believes Dusty’s injuries could have been even worse if she hadn’t been wearing long sleeves and long pants that afternoon.

Over the past year, Paige and Dusty have spent months living near the hospital and at Ronald McDonald House, separated from the rest of their family while Dusty continued her treatments. 🏡

“A burn injury changes your whole life,” Paige said.

“It has been incredibly challenging. But Dusty has made amazing progress, and she’s able to use her hand now, which is wonderful.”
