At just 15 months old, Owen Lower has a personality that lights up every room. With his spiky hair, cheeky grin, and sparkling brown eyes, the Indiana toddler loves playing with drumsticks, shaking maracas, and proudly carrying his tiny guitar wherever he goes. 🎶😊

Behind his joyful smile is an extraordinary story of courage that began before he was even born.

During pregnancy, doctors discovered that Owen had a mᴀssive cervical teratoma—an extremely rare tumor growing on his neck that was even larger than his own head. The tumor was so large that it threatened to block his airway completely the moment he entered the world, putting his life in immediate danger. 🩺💙

His parents, Dustin Lower and Katy Preidt, were told their unborn son faced life-threatening complications, including difficulty breathing, poor growth, fluid buildup, and the possibility of premature delivery.

“We tried not to search too much online because the images were terrifying,” Katy recalled. “But we knew right away how serious it was.” ❤️

Determined to give Owen every chance at life, specialists at Riley Hospital for Children ᴀssembled a multidisciplinary team months before his birth. Surgeons, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and maternal-fetal medicine experts carefully planned every detail of his delivery. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

To save Owen, doctors performed a highly specialized EXIT procedure, partially delivering him by cesarean section while he remained connected to the placenta. This gave the surgical team precious extra minutes to secure his airway before he took his first breath.

“One of the doctors squeezed my hand and told me Owen had survived,” Katy said. “That moment changed everything.” 🙏✨

After birth, Owen was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where he remained under close observation while doctors prepared for another major challenge—removing the enormous tumor.

“We were so focused on surviving the delivery that we didn’t realize how difficult the NICU journey would be,” Katy shared. “Every sound from the monitors mattered.”

Throughout those difficult weeks, the family found comfort in the compᴀssion of the medical team.

“The nurses and doctors treated us like family,” she said. “We will never forget their kindness.” 💕

Once Owen was strong enough, surgeons successfully removed the entire tumor during a delicate operation involving multiple specialists.

“They removed it all in one piece,” Katy said. “We had incredible doctors, and we trusted them completely.” 🌟

After weeks of recovery, Owen gradually grew stronger, and his lively personality began shining through.

Today, the little boy who once fought simply to breathe is a playful toddler who loves dinosaurs, cars, Elmo, and making as much joyful noise as possible with his toy musical instruments.
