MINNEAPOLIS — Nearly three years after the tragic loss of two-year-old Le’Vonte King Jason Jones, prosecutors have filed second-degree murder charges against Chris Welch in connection with the 2016 incident that shocked the Minneapolis community.

Le’Vonte was inside a minivan in north Minneapolis on July 8, 2016, when authorities say an exchange of gunfire occurred between individuals in separate vehicles. His 15-month-old sister was also inside the vehicle at the time and survived.

Le’Vonte suffered serious injuries and later pᴀssed away, leaving his family and community devastated. The tragedy sparked widespread grief, with residents gathering to remember the young child through vigils, flowers, and messages of support.

According to authorities, the case remained active for years as investigators continued searching for additional information. Officials said new witness statements and cellphone data played an important role in moving the investigation forward.

Investigators allege that Welch and Melvonte Peterson, who was driving the vehicle carrying the children, were involved in an exchange of gunfire.
