A college community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Emily Mae Smith, a 20-year-old student-athlete remembered for her leadership, kindness, and ability to inspire everyone around her.
Emily, a sophomore at SUNY Potsdam, lost her life after being struck by a vehicle near Pierrepont Avenue early Saturday morning.
According to authorities, police responded around 3:37 a.m. after receiving reports of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Emily was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to save her. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ from her injuries.
Investigators said the vehicle involved left the scene following the incident.
Authorities later located the suspected driver, identified as 18-year-old Jakob D. Krise of Brasher Falls, New York. Police reported that the vehicle had damage consistent with the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have indicated that additional charges may be considered as evidence continues to be reviewed.
While the investigation continues, the SUNY Potsdam community is focusing on remembering Emily’s life and the impact she made.
