Baby born with a rare eye condition begins treatment to support healthy facial development

Nine-month-old Izabella Myers is undergoing a specialized treatment designed to help her facial bones develop as she grows after being born with a rare eye condition.
Izabella was born without a fully developed left eye. At birth, doctors diagnosed her with microphthalmia, a rare congenital condition in which one or both eyes do not develop normally.
Her mother, Alexis Miller, first learned something might be different during her 20-week pregnancy scan, when doctors were unable to identify her daughter’s left eye.
“I was devastated,” Alexis recalled. “No parent wants their child to face challenges like that.”
But everything changed the moment Izabella was born.

“When I saw her, I thought she was beautiful.”
Doctors later confirmed that some eye tissue had begun to develop during pregnancy but had stopped before birth. Further testing suggested the condition was linked to a rare genetic variation.
To support normal growth of the bones around her eye, Izabella began treatment at just three months old.
She now wears a specially designed orbital expander, which is gradually replaced with a slightly larger one every two weeks. The device slowly expands the eye socket as she grows, helping create enough space for a future prosthetic eye and encouraging balanced facial development.
Doctors expect Izabella to receive her first prosthetic eye before her first birthday because it plays an important role in supporting the growth of the surrounding bones and tissues.

Although Alexis understands the medical reasons for the prosthesis, she admits the experience is emotional.
“Medically, she needs it,” she said. “But if she didn’t, I would rather wait until she was old enough to decide for herself. I love her exactly the way she is.”
Because Izabella has limited vision on her left side, she is also working with therapists to strengthen the vision in her right eye and learn ways to better navigate her surroundings.
Looking ahead, Alexis hopes her daughter grows up with confidence and never feels defined by her appearance.
“As she gets older, I know people may notice she’s different,” she said. “I’ll always remind her that she can do anything she sets her mind to.”
Izabella’s older sister, Kyliegh, has become one of her biggest supporters.
“Now she tells everyone that Izabella was born without an eye,” Alexis said. “To her, she’s no different from anyone else. She’s still beautiful.”
Surrounded by the love of her family and the care of her medical team, Izabella continues to reach new milestones, proving that a visible difference is only one small part of who she is.
