A quiet neighborhood in Belforest, Alabama, is mourning after a tragic domestic incident on the evening of July 5 left one family forever changed.

According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a serious emergency at a home in the St. Augustine community. Investigators say the incident began during a family dispute involving 37-year-old Samantha Baker, her husband Lance Baker, and their 17-year-old son.

Authorities allege that the situation escalated rapidly while the parents were attempting to discipline the teenager. Samantha Baker sustained fatal injuries during the incident despite efforts to reach safety.

Lance Baker, 46, was also seriously injured and was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition while receiving specialized medical care.

Officials identified Samantha Baker as a real estate professional and a former member of both the National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. Lance Baker has served in the U.S. Army Reserve for more than 26 years and currently holds the rank of battalion commander.

Investigators reported that after the incident, the teenager remained inside the home and contacted emergency services. During that call, authorities say he acknowledged that a confrontation had occurred. Deputies later took him into custody without further incident.

The 17-year-old has been charged with homicide and attempted homicide. Because of the seriousness of the allegations, prosecutors intend to proceed with the case in adult court. A judge has set bond at $1 million while investigators continue reviewing evidence and establishing the complete sequence of events.

Neighbors described the incident as deeply distressing, with several saying they had never imagined such a tragedy could occur in their normally peaceful community. Many residents have since gathered to support one another while extending condolences to everyone affected.

As the investigation continues, local officials have asked the public to allow the legal process to proceed while respecting the privacy of those involved.
