What should have been a joyful countdown to a toddler’s second birthday instead became one of the most frightening moments of a mother’s life.
Emily was forced to call emergency services after her young son, Emhyr, experienced a prolonged seizure that left him turning blue in her arms. As she waited for help to arrive, every second felt endless as she watched her child struggle to recover.
Although Emily works as a nurse and has extensive medical knowledge, she later shared that nothing could prepare her for experiencing such an emergency with her own child.
“When it’s your child,” she explained, “everything feels different.”
The frightening episode marked the beginning of an ongoing medical journey for Emhyr and his family. Since that first seizure, he has experienced additional episodes, leading doctors to conduct a series of diagnostic tests, including MRI scans, electroencephalograms (EEGs), and continued neurological evaluations in an effort to better understand his condition and guide treatment.
Amid those medical challenges, Emhyr was also diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Level 2, a diagnosis that brought its own set of adjustments for the family.
Along with developmental support, Emily says one of their greatest daily concerns is Emhyr’s tendency to wander unexpectedly, a behavior sometimes referred to as elopement. Children with autism who experience elopement may leave safe environments without recognizing common dangers such as busy roads, traffic, or unfamiliar surroundings, requiring constant supervision.
For Emily and her family, everyday routines now involve careful planning, close monitoring, and ongoing medical appointments. What many families take for granted—playing outside, visiting parks, or running errands—often requires additional safety precautions.
Medical experts note that seizures in young children can have many possible causes, and determining the underlying reason may require months of evaluation. Likewise, autism affects every child differently, with support plans tailored to each individual’s needs and strengths.
Despite the uncertainty, Emily continues to share her family’s story to raise awareness about both pediatric seizures and autism. She hopes that by speaking openly about their experiences, other families facing similar challenges will feel less alone and more empowered to seek support.
Today, Emhyr continues his journey surrounded by the unwavering love of his family. While his path may include medical appointments, therapies, and daily challenges, it is also filled with determination, resilience, and hope for the future.
