Family Seeks Justice After 19-Year-Old Woman Dies in Alleged Fourth of July Hit-and-Run Crash

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — A Fourth of July celebration ended in tragedy after 19-year-old Anahi Mendoza was killed in a crash that authorities say involved an allegedly impaired driver who fled the scene.

According to the Sedro-Woolley Police Department, the collision occurred near the intersection of Highway 20 and Township Street during the Independence Day holiday. Investigators allege the driver was speeding and driving under the influence when the vehicle struck Mendoza.

Police say the driver left the scene following the collision instead of stopping to render aid or wait for emergency responders. Officers later located and arrested the suspect.

Despite the efforts of first responders, Mendoza died at the scene.

The suspect has since been charged with felony vehicular homicide and hit-and-run. During an initial court appearance, a judge set bail at $750,000. Court records indicate the defendant’s next hearing is scheduled for July 16 after waiving the right to a speedy arraignment.

During the hearing, prosecutors outlined the suspect’s extensive criminal history, stating that it includes 17 felony convictions in Washington dating back to 1989, along with additional offenses in other states. According to prosecutors, the prior convictions include vehicular ᴀssault, multiple counts of attempting to elude law enforcement, theft, and attempted ᴀssault. They also told the court that the suspect had rarely gone more than two years without another arrest over several decades.

Those details have intensified the grief and frustration felt by Mendoza’s family, who believe the tragedy might have been preventable. They say they are seeking accountability while mourning the loss of a young woman whose life ended far too soon.

As the criminal case moves forward, family members continue to remember Anahi for the life she lived rather than the circumstances of her death. Friends and members of the community have offered condolences and support as her loved ones navigate the difficult days ahead.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details beyond the charges currently filed. The allegations against the defendant have not yet been proven in court, and the case will proceed through the judicial process.

For Anahi’s family, however, the focus remains on honoring her memory while hoping that justice will be served. Her death has also renewed conversations within the community about impaired driving, repeat offenders, and the devastating consequences that can result when dangerous choices are made behind the wheel.
