đź’” Remembering 2-Year-Old Parker Scholtes as New Investigation Details Are Released

The heartbreaking death of two-year-old Parker Scholtes has once again brought attention to the dangers of leaving children unattended inside parked vehicles, as newly released investigative records provide additional details about the tragedy that occurred in Marana, Arizona.

According to investigators, Parker died after being left alone inside a parked SUV for nearly three and a half hours during extreme summer heat. Authorities reported that outdoor temperatures reached approximately 109°F (43°C), causing the temperature inside the vehicle to rise to life-threatening levels in a short period of time.

Police allege that Parker had fallen asleep in her car seat during the drive home with her father, Christopher Scholtes. After arriving at the family’s home, investigators say he left her secured inside the vehicle, believing she would continue sleeping while he went inside.

According to court documents, Christopher Scholtes entered the air-conditioned home and became distracted while Parker remained alone in the SUV. Investigators allege he spent time playing video games, drinking beer, and viewing adult content during that period.

As part of the investigation, officers conducted testing that found the surface of Parker’s car seat reached approximately 149°F (65°C), temperatures capable of causing severe injury within minutes.

Parker was later discovered by her mother, Erika Scholtes, after she returned home from work. She immediately called for emergency á´€ssistance, but despite lifesaving efforts, the young child could not be revived.

Investigators also released pH๏τographs showing small handprints on the inside of one of the SUV’s windows. Authorities believe the markings suggest Parker was conscious for at least part of the time and tried to move while still restrained in her forward-facing car seat. Officers additionally documented a tablet and the child’s sandals inside the vehicle.

Christopher Scholtes reportedly told investigators that he believed the vehicle’s engine and air conditioning had remained running. Authorities later determined that the SUV’s engine had automatically shut off after approximately 20 minutes due to its built-in fuel-saving system.

Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Christopher Scholtes with murder. Before the criminal case could proceed to sentencing, authorities reported that he died by suicide while in custody.

Although the criminal proceedings ended with his death, investigators released additional records in an effort to provide transparency and to reinforce an important public safety message. Parker’s heartbreaking story serves as a reminder of how quickly temperatures inside a parked vehicle can become fatal, even when a caregiver does not intend for harm to occur.

Today, Parker is remembered as a little girl whose life ended far too soon. Her memory continues to inspire renewed awareness about the importance of never leaving a child unattended inside a vehicle, with the hope that greater awareness may help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
