An evening spent supporting Australia’s national soccer team ended in tragedy for 18-year-old Cesare Liberatore, who died after a serious traffic collision in Melbourne’s northwest early Saturday morning.

Liberatore had attended a public World Cup viewing at Federation Square with friends before the crash on Mickleham Road in Attwood. Two other teenagers traveling in the same vehicle remain hospitalized with serious injuries as police continue investigating the circumstances of the collision.

Crash Occurred During Journey Home
According to investigators, the crash occurred at approximately 7 a.m. when a Mitsubishi Triton carrying three teenagers crossed a median strip and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Emergency services responded to the scene and transported all three occupants to hospital.

Liberatore later died from his injuries. The two other teenage occupants sustained serious, including life-threatening, injuries and continue to receive medical treatment.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and have not announced any findings regarding contributing factors.
