The death of 12-year-old Danilo Coles has continued to highlight the importance of protecting children from abuse and ensuring that those responsible for their care are held accountable when that responsibility is violated.

According to court records, Danilo died in 2022 after enduring prolonged physical punishment inside his home in San Antonio, Texas. Prosecutors alleged that he was forced to perform strenuous physical exercises while carrying a heavy case of bottled water and was repeatedly struck during the punishment.

When emergency responders arrived, Danilo was unresponsive. Despite medical efforts to save him, he later died from his injuries.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition in which severe muscle damage releases harmful substances into the bloodstream, potentially leading to organ failure. Medical evidence presented during the case also documented extensive injuries consistent with prolonged physical abuse.

During the criminal proceedings, prosecutors argued that both of Danilo’s caregivers were responsible for the abuse that ultimately led to his death.

Danilo’s stepmother, Kapri Cheatom, was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after serving the portion of her sentence required by law. During sentencing, the court stated that she had failed to protect a vulnerable child from harm.

His father, Derrick Coles, had previously been sentenced to 45 years in prison for his role in the case. Together, the sentences reflected the court’s finding that both adults bore responsibility for the circumstances that resulted in Danilo’s death.
