Twins Born With Different Skin Tones Surprise Their Parents and Capture Worldwide Attention

When Chantelle Broughton gave birth to twins Ayon and Azirah, she expected the usual excitement and emotions that come with welcoming newborn babies. What she did not expect was that her children would become the focus of fascination due to their remarkably different appearances.

The 29-year-old mother from Nottingham was stunned when her twins arrived with noticeably different skin tones, eye colors, and features—a rare genetic occurrence that continues to attract attention from people around the world.

The twins were born in April at Nottingham City Hospital. Ayon arrived first, with lighter skin and green eyes. Moments later, his sister Azirah was born with a darker complexion and brown eyes. The striking contrast between the siblings immediately surprised both parents.

What makes the twins’ appearance especially unique is their diverse family heritage. Chantelle, an auxiliary nurse, has mixed ancestry and traces part of her family roots to Nigeria through her maternal grandfather. The twins’ father, Ashton, also 29, has Jamaican and Scottish heritage.

Although the babies looked more similar at birth, their differences became increasingly noticeable as they grew.

“Her skin tone changed so much as she got older,” Chantelle explained. “She became darker over time and is now even darker than her dad.”

By four months of age, the twins had developed distinctly different appearances. Along with differences in skin tone and eye color, Chantelle noticed contrasts in their hair texture and facial features.

The siblings also display very different personalities.

“Ayon loves attention, enjoys being held, and is always making sounds,” Chantelle said. “Azirah is much calmer and more relaxed.”

Genetics experts explain that while uncommon, twins with noticeably different skin tones can occur when parents have mixed ethnic backgrounds. Fraternal twins inherit different combinations of genes from their parents, which can sometimes result in dramatic variations in physical appearance.

Whenever Chantelle takes the twins out in public, she quickly becomes accustomed to curious looks and questions from strangers.

“People already look when they see twins in a stroller,” she joked. “But with these two, people really stop and stare.”

The difference between the siblings is so striking that some people have difficulty believing they are twins at all. Chantelle says she has even been asked whether both children are hers.

Despite the attention, she says most reactions come from genuine curiosity rather than negativity. Many people are simply amazed to learn that twins can look so different while sharing the same birthday and family.

As Ayon and Azirah continue to grow, their story serves as a fascinating reminder of the incredible diversity of human genetics. While they may look very different on the outside, they remain brother and sister, sharing a unique bond that has captured the interest of people around the world.

For their parents, however, the twins are simply a joyful reminder that nature can sometimes produce extraordinary surprises.
