When Sharon Cutts takes her three energetic children to playgroups, school activities, or family outings, she occasionally notices people looking twice. Some ᴀssume she must be their grandmother rather than their mother.

For Sharon, now in her late fifties, the answer never changes.

She is the proud mother of triplets Lily, Ryan, and Mason, children she welcomed after an extraordinary fertility journey that began when she was 55 years old.

The surgical nurse from Boston, Lincolnshire, already had a large family before the triplets arrived. She was the mother of four adult children and grandmother to six grandchildren when her life took an unexpected turn after meeting her fiancé, Stuart, in 2011 following the amicable end of her 24-year marriage.

While Sharon had already experienced motherhood, Stuart had never had children of his own. Early in their relationship, Sharon was honest about the challenges they faced.

“At the beginning, I told him that if having children was important to him, he would probably need to find someone younger,” she recalled.

But as their relationship deepened, the couple found themselves exploring the possibility of building a family together despite the obstacles.

Because Sharon had already gone through menopause and was no longer producing eggs, traditional conception was not possible. The couple learned that IVF using donor eggs offered their best chance of having a child.

What followed was a long, emotional, and expensive journey.

The couple invested approximately £20,000 in two IVF treatments in the United Kingdom, but both attempts ended in disappointment. Many would have given up after such setbacks, but Sharon and Stuart remained determined.

Refusing to abandon their dream, Sharon used part of her pension savings to pursue another treatment cycle in Cyprus, where fertility procedures were available at a lower cost. The treatment reportedly cost around £5,000.

Doctors transferred four embryos—two male and two female—in hopes of improving the chances of a successful pregnancy.

The outcome exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Not only did the treatment work, but three of the embryos successfully developed, resulting in a triplet pregnancy.

Due to Sharon’s age and the risks ᴀssociated with carrying multiple babies, doctors closely monitored the pregnancy from the beginning. Multiple pregnancies already present significant medical challenges, and those risks increase further for older mothers.

Despite the concerns, Sharon successfully carried the babies and eventually welcomed Lily, Ryan, and Mason into the world.

The arrival of the triplets transformed life for the couple overnight. Sharon suddenly found herself caring for newborns again decades after raising her first children.

While the demands of parenting young children in her fifties were considerable, she says the experience has been one of the most fulfilling chapters of her life.
