FIFA Meeting Looms as Iran Says Visa Issue Could Disrupt World Cup Plans

Iran’s World Cup preparations are facing fresh uncertainty as the country’s football federation says visa delays could affect its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Iranian football chief Mehdi Taj said no members of the national team delegation had yet received U.S. visas, raising concern ahead of a key meeting with FIFA. Iran is seeking guarantees that all players, coaches, and staff will be allowed to enter host countries without political restrictions.

The issue has become more sensitive because some Iranian officials and team members may have links to mandatory service in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and Canada. Taj was reportedly denied entry to Canada for the FIFA Congress, adding to Tehran’s concerns.

Despite the uncertainty, Iran says it is continuing preparations for the tournament. Fans recently gathered in Tehran for a public send-off rally, while the team is expected to continue training abroad before the World Cup begins.

For FIFA, the upcoming meeting could be critical. Iran wants clear ᴀssurances on visas, security, and respect for its national symbols. Without a solution, the dispute could become one of the biggest political flashpoints before the tournament even begins.
