Pope Leo XIV: “We Must Rediscover the Signs and Symbols of the Sacred Liturgy”!lh

VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has called on Catholics to deepen their understanding of the sacred liturgy by rediscovering its rich signs and symbols, emphasizing that they are essential pathways into the mystery of God rather than mere ritual decorations.

Speaking during a catechetical reflection at the Vatican, the Pope explained that the Church’s liturgical life communicates through a language of symbols—gestures, words, sacred objects, music, and silence—that together reveal the invisible reality of God’s grace. He encouraged the faithful to approach the liturgy with greater awareness and reverence.
“The sacred liturgy speaks through signs that we must learn to understand,” Pope Leo said. He noted that elements such as incense, candles, the sign of the cross, liturgical colors, and moments of silence all carry deep spiritual meaning rooted in Scripture and tradition.

The Pope warned that modern culture’s emphasis on speed and distraction can make it difficult for people to appreciate the depth of liturgical prayer. He encouraged pastors and catechists to help the faithful, especially younger generations, rediscover the beauty and meaning embedded in the Church’s worship.
Pope Leo also stressed that the liturgy is not simply a human gathering or ceremonial practice, but an encounter with Christ who acts through the Church. Proper understanding of its symbols, he said, helps believers participate more fully in the mysteries they celebrate.

Concluding his reflection, the Pope invited Catholics to enter more deeply into the liturgy with attentive hearts, allowing its signs and symbols to form their faith and shape their daily lives. In doing so, he said, the faithful can experience worship not only as ritual, but as a living encounter with God that transforms the whole person.
