Marion Barter: The Australian Mother Who Sold Her House, Changed Her Name, and Vanished in Europe – Her Daughter Still Searching After Nearly 30 Years!
On 22 June 1997, 51-year-old teacher and mother Marion Barter was dropped at a bus stop in Southport, Queensland, for a flight to the United Kingdom. She was never seen again. Nearly 29 years later, her daughter Sally Leydon continues a relentless search, backed by a $1 million reward announced by NSW Police in May 2026.
Just weeks before departure, Marion secretly changed her name via deed poll to Florabella Natalia Marion Remakel and obtained a new pᴀssport. She sold her house, told few details to family, and listed her destination as England with possible long-term plans. Her outgoing pᴀssenger card showed her as “divorced” intending to reside in Luxembourg.
Evidence later revealed she returned to Australia on 2 August 1997 under the new name, with the incoming card stating she was “married” and living in Luxembourg. This was her last confirmed movement. She spoke briefly with Leydon in early August but missed her son’s 23rd birthday in October. Leydon reported her missing on 22 October 1997.

A 2024 coronial inquest concluded Marion is deceased, likely after 15 October 1997. Her body has never been found. The case is now treated as a homicide investigation by the Unsolved Homicide Squad. Central to the mystery is her relationship with conman Ric Blum, who had multiple connections to women who suffered financial losses. Marion had recently met him.
No pᴀssport use, bank activity, or sightings have been confirmed since 1997. Leydon’s podcast The Missing Matter (launched 2025) and public appeals keep the case alive. Marion would be 80 today. Despite the name change, house sale, and European trail, her fate remains one of Australia’s most haunting cold cases—proof that even a mother who planned a fresh start can disappear without trace.
