Thai Spinosaurid Longer Than a Pickup Truck Rewrites Southeast Asian Dinosaur History!

Paleontologists have announced a colossal new spinosaurid from Thailand that was longer than a modern pickup truck and dramatically expands the known range and diversity of these crocodile-snouted predators in Southeast Asia.

Described June 2026 in Scientific Reports, the partial skeleton — including a mᴀssive 1.4-meter skull, vertebrae, and limb bones — was recovered from the Early Cretaceous Khorat Group in northeastern Thailand. At an estimated 11–12 meters long, the animal surpᴀsses most known Asian spinosaurids and rivals some of the largest European and African species. Its elongated, crocodile-like snout and interlocking teeth confirm a semi-aquatic lifestyle, hunting fish and terrestrial prey along ancient river systems.

Lead author Sita Manitkoon (Mahasarakham University) states: “This is the largest spinosaurid ever found in Southeast Asia. It shows these specialized predators were not rare visitors but dominant members of the Thai Cretaceous ecosystem.” The discovery pushes spinosaurid presence in the region back by several million years and suggests a direct biogeographic link with Chinese and Japanese spinosaurids, rather than a simple dispersal from Europe or Africa.

CT scans reveal a sophisticated air-sac system and powerful swimming adaptations, supporting the hypothesis that these dinosaurs were active aquatic hunters. The find also helps explain the abundance of spinosaurid teeth previously reported from Thailand — they belonged to giants, not small animals.

This discovery rewrites the paleobiogeography of Southeast Asia, proving the region hosted some of the largest and most specialized spinosaurids on Earth during the Early Cretaceous. As more Khorat Group material is prepared, Thailand is emerging as a key center of spinosaurid evolution — a lost river world where crocodile-faced giants once ruled.
