MADISONVILLE, Ky. (WKRC) — A 10-month-old Kentucky girl died after police said her grandmother forgot to take her to daycare and left her inside a vehicle while she went to work.

Scottie Crowell was found Thursday in a vehicle parked outside Owensboro Health Multicare in Madisonville, according to police, via WFIE. Investigators said Scottie’s grandmother picked up the baby Thursday morning and was supposed to take her to daycare before going to work at the health facility. Police said she instead drove directly to work around 8 a.m., forgetting the child was still inside the vehicle.

The mistake was discovered later that day when Scottie’s father went to daycare to pick her up and learned she had never been dropped off. He contacted his wife, who then called the grandmother.

“She ran outside with some co-workers to get the child,” Madisonville Police Maj. Jason McKnight said. “But it was far too late by then.”

Police, firefighters and medical personnel responded and attempted to save the infant.

“Officers tried some lifesaving measures, but unfortunately it was too late for that,” McKnight said.

Kentucky Child Protective Services worked alongside detectives during the investigation and interviews, police said.

The grandmother consented to a blood test, which McKnight said was standard procedure. Investigators said they do not expect the results to show impairment but are awaiting testing from the state laboratory.

An autopsy has also been performed, although final results could take several weeks.

No charges have been filed. Police said investigators are gathering additional information before determining what charges, if any, may be appropriate.The case is expected to be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is completed.
