Doctors warned a young Ohio couple that their unborn baby might not survive birth — and, if he did, he could face profound neurological challenges. But little Bentley Yoder has defied expectations and continues to amaze his family and doctors. 🥺💙

Bentley was diagnosed before birth with encephalocele, an extremely rare condition in which brain tissue and its surrounding membranes protrude through an opening in the skull. 🧠

Sierra and Dustin Yoder, both 25 and from Sugarcreek, Ohio, were told that their son’s condition was so severe that they were encouraged to consider ending the pregnancy.

At first, the couple believed that was the best option. But when the day of their scheduled appointment arrived, they changed their minds.

They decided they wanted to meet their baby — no matter how brief that time might be. ❤️

“We were excited to meet him, even if it was only for an hour,” Sierra recalled.

“We were just relieved he made it that far and we would get to meet him, living and breathing.”

The couple had already welcomed their first son, Beau, and were desperately hoping to give him a little brother. Even though doctors had warned them they might not have much time together, they remained determined to welcome Bentley into the world. 👶💙

On October 31, Bentley was born.

Doctors had not expected him to live for long, yet 36 hours later, he was still fighting. 🌟

His early months were difficult. Doctors recommended hospice care, and Bentley was hospitalized multiple times after developing a respiratory virus and lung infections. His future remained uncertain. ❤️‍🩹

Then, about four months later, doctors made an extraordinary discovery.

Bentley appeared to be using the brain tissue located outside his skull — something they had initially feared might not be functional.

The family traveled to Boston Children’s Hospital, where specialists determined that a significant portion of Bentley’s brain was indeed outside his skull. Remarkably, he was using it. 🧠✨

Instead of removing the protruding brain tissue, surgeons developed an innovative plan to make room for it inside Bentley’s skull.

Using 3-D printed models, the surgical team carefully planned and practiced the complex procedure. Their goal was to gradually expand Bentley’s skull so the brain tissue could safely return inside. 🏥💙

Surgeons made several vertical cuts in his skull and inserted specially designed dissolving plates to hold the expanded area open, creating enough space for Bentley’s brain.

The surgery took place on May 24 and lasted around five hours.

When Bentley emerged from the operation, his parents were overwhelmed with emotion. Bandaged and dressed in a tiny hospital gown, he looked up at his parents, grandparents and big brother Beau. 🥹💙

“He was awake; he was looking at us,” Sierra recalled.

“He wasn’t cranky. He was just lying there, taking it all in.”

Just one month after surgery, Bentley was already making remarkable progress. He was able to hold his head up and was eating, smiling and jabbering. 🍼😊

Now seven months old, Bentley’s future looks far more hopeful than his parents ever imagined. Doctors have told the family that he could go on to have a “rewarding life” as they continue monitoring his development one step at a time. 🌱💙
