At just 15 months old, Tilly Lockey faced a battle that few could imagine.

The little girl from County Durham became critically ill after developing Group B meningococcal septicaemia, a life-threatening infection that left doctors fighting to save her life. To give her a chance to survive, both of her hands and several of her toes had to be amputated.

Her family was told that her chances of survival were heartbreakingly small.

But Tilly had a different story waiting to be written. 💙

Nearly two decades later, the once-fragile toddler has become one of the world’s most inspiring advocates for bionic technology. Today, she not only wears some of the most advanced prosthetic hands ever created—she is helping design them.

Growing up, Tilly refused to let her limb difference define what she could achieve.

She taught herself how to paint, draw, open food packages, and complete everyday tasks by discovering creative solutions instead of focusing on limitations.

“I’ll teach myself to do things,” Tilly once said. “If you keep trying, anything can come together in the end.”

Her determination became one of her greatest strengths. ❤️

Her earliest prosthetic hands were simple, offering only basic opening and closing movements. While they restored some independence, they couldn’t keep up with the energy and curiosity of a growing child.

Rather than accepting those limitations, Tilly decided to help change the future.

She began working with British robotics company Open Bionics, becoming much more than someone who simply used prosthetic hands.

For nearly a decade, she tested new prototypes, sharing honest feedback about comfort, grip strength, weight, speed, flexibility, and how each design performed in everyday life.

Her real-world experience gave engineers something no laboratory could provide.

“Tilly tells them when something feels uncomfortable, when it’s too heavy, or when it simply doesn’t work in daily life,” her mother, Sarah, explained. “Children like her are the ones who truly help improve this technology.”

In 2025, at 19 years old, Tilly helped introduce the company’s newest breakthrough—the Hero PRO bionic hand. 🦾

Using tiny wireless sensors built into the prosthetic socket, the device detects electrical signals generated by the muscles in her arms. Those signals are instantly translated into movement, allowing her to control each finger naturally—without brain implants or handheld controllers.

One of its most remarkable features even allows Tilly to remove one prosthetic hand while continuing to control it wirelessly from a short distance, demonstrating just how far bionic technology has advanced.

The Hero PRO can close its fingers in approximately 0.6 seconds, perform multiple grip patterns, rotate at the wrist, and withstand many of the challenges of everyday life, including brief exposure to water.

Yet perhaps the most remarkable part of this story isn’t the technology itself.

It’s the person helping shape it.

Open Bionics gathered feedback from around 1,000 prosthetic users while developing its newest generation of bionic hands, and Tilly became one of the most influential voices throughout that journey.
