🥹👶 Born 17 Weeks Early, Twin Babies Finally Go Home After Eight-Month Hospital Journey Filled With Courage and Hope

After spending more than half a year fighting through serious medical challenges, twin siblings Orla and Frankie have finally returned home with their family — marking the end of an emotional eight-month hospital journey.

The twins were born extremely prematurely in Edinburgh in September 2025, arriving 17 weeks before their expected due date. Their early arrival brought immediate uncertainty, but their parents say both children showed incredible strength from the very beginning.

Mother Amy Sharkey, 32, gave birth to Orla on September 7, 2025, when she was just 23 weeks and two days into pregnancy. The tiny baby weighed only 1lb 1oz.

Frankie remained in the womb for another four days before being delivered on September 11, weighing 1lb 5oz.

Before their births, Amy and her partner, Jack Ginn, 33, were warned that babies born at such an early stage often face extremely difficult odds. Doctors explained that survival rates for babies born this early can be very low.

But Orla and Frankie continued proving their strength.

Jack remembers how incredibly small they were when they were born, saying they could almost fit in the palm of his hand. Despite their size, their personalities quickly began to shine.

Their parents describe Orla as determined, energetic, and strong-willed, while Frankie is known for being affectionate, cheerful, and happiest when receiving cuddles.

The pregnancy had appeared normal until Amy’s 20-week scan, when doctors discovered unexpected complications. She was admitted to hospital after doctors found she was already dilated much earlier than expected.

A cervical sтιтch was placed in an attempt to delay labour, and Jack believes those extra days gave the twins valuable time to grow stronger before birth.

After Orla’s delivery, Frankie remained in the womb for several more days. However, doctors later became concerned about possible complications and decided he also needed to be delivered.

Both babies were transferred immediately to neonatal care, where their long fight continued.

At only 10 days old, Orla developed necrotising enterocolitis, a serious condition affecting premature babies. The illness caused significant complications and required multiple surgeries.

Doctors warned Amy and Jack several times that Orla’s condition was extremely serious, but the couple chose to continue fighting alongside their daughter.

Over the following months, Orla underwent several procedures, including major abdominal surgery. Part of her bowel and colon were removed, and she spent more than 100 days with a stoma before surgeons were eventually able to reconnect her bowel.

Her parents say Orla repeatedly surprised medical teams with her determination and recovery.

Frankie also faced significant challenges, including chronic lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and retinopathy of prematurity, a condition affecting the eyes of some babies born extremely early. He later received treatment to help protect his vision.

After 161 days in hospital, Frankie was finally discharged on February 19, 2026.

The family then waited while Orla continued her recovery, staying near the hospital so they could remain close.

On April 20, 2026, Orla finally joined her brother at home — 225 days after she was born.

For the first time, the entire family could begin life together outside the hospital walls.

Although both children still require medical support, their parents are grateful for every milestone. Frankie continues using oxygen, and both babies receive nutrition through feeding tubes, but their progress has given their family hope.

Amy and Jack expressed deep graтιтude to the medical teams who cared for their children, as well as organizations that supported them throughout their long hospital stay.

After months of uncertainty, sleepless nights, and countless moments of fear, the family says their twins’ survival feels nothing short of a miracle.

Two tiny babies who entered the world far too soon have now shown just how powerful courage, love, and determination can be.
