π¨ THE A66 TRAGEDY: TWO POLICE OFFICERS AND FIVE YOUNG MEN DIED β NOW QUESTIONS ARE GROWING OVER CLEVELAND POLICE RESOURCES
In the early hours of August 22, 2026, a Volkswagen Pα΄ssat travelling on the wrong side of the A66 near South Bank, Middlesbrough, collided head-on with a marked Cleveland Police vehicle. Seven people died, including police officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, along with five young men travelling in the Pα΄ssat.
The tragedy has since become part of a much wider investigation into serious and organised crime and a wave of violence around Middlesbrough. Cleveland Police has made 24 arrests as the investigation has expanded, while more than 200 additional officers have been brought into the area.
Now, attention is also turning toward claims that Cleveland Police had repeatedly warned about severe pressure on its resources. The force has faced years of staffing and funding difficulties, raising questions about whether enough support was provided as organised crime and serious violence placed increasing demands on officers.
The A66 crash itself remains the central tragedy: seven lives lost in a matter of seconds, including two officers who were responding to events unfolding around them.
The investigation continues, while families, colleagues and the wider Middlesbrough community try to understand how the events of that night unfolded.
