The death of five-year-old Kinsleigh Welty has resulted in a life-without-parole sentence for her mother after a criminal case that exposed disturbing allegations of prolonged neglect.

Kinsleigh was found unresponsive on April 9, 2024, and was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

Authorities determined that the little girl had suffered severe malnutrition. One of the most heartbreaking details to emerge from the investigation was her weight: at five years old, Kinsleigh weighed less than she had when she was only two.

Investigators subsequently uncovered evidence describing a pattern of neglect.

According to court records, Kinsleigh had repeatedly been denied food and water. She was also allegedly confined inside a closet, keeping her separated from the rest of the household.

Records further described the use of duct tape to restrain the child and prevent her from accessing food.

The allegations painted a picture of a young child whose basic needs were repeatedly neglected during a period when she should have been protected and cared for.

Kinsleigh’s mother, Toni McClure, 31, was arrested the day after her daughter’s death.

She was charged with m*rder, criminal confinement and battery.

The case eventually went to trial, but the first trial ended in a mistrial. During a second trial, a jury found McClure guilty on all counts.

She was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without parole in Indiana.

But McClure was not the only adult to face criminal consequences.

Her boyfriend, Ryan Smith, and her mother, Tammy Halsey, separately pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Both received 20-year prison sentences.

The case has also raised questions about previous involvement by Indiana’s Department of Child Services before Kinsleigh’s death. Those questions have added another layer to a tragedy that has already left many people asking how a vulnerable child could remain in such circumstances for so long.

For Kinsleigh’s loved ones and those following the case, the sentence may provide a measure of accountability, but it cannot undo what happened to a five-year-old girl who never got the opportunity to grow up.

Her childhood should have been filled with ordinary things: meals at the table, school days, laughter, birthday celebrations and the security of knowing that adults would protect her.
