he legal case surrounding the 16 children rescued from a Hamden, Ohio, home has taken a new turn as Elizabeth Siders’ defense raises questions about her mental state and ability to stand trial.

Siders’ attorney asked the court for a psychological evaluation to determine whether she is competent to participate in the proceedings and whether an insanity defense could potentially apply. A judge granted the request on August 10. Similar competency evaluations have also been ordered for the other three adults charged in the case.

The defense has pointed to Siders’ difficult personal history, including becoming a mother at a young age and years of isolation from insтιтutions and outside services. Her attorney has argued that these circumstances may be important in understanding her psychological condition.

The case began on June 30, when authorities discovered 16 children living in severely neglected conditions inside a Hamden rental home. The four adults arrested — Elizabeth Siders, her husband Gary Siders Jr., and grandparents Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders — have pleaded not guilty to child-endangerment charges.

Now, mental-health professionals will examine whether Elizabeth Siders is competent to face the proceedings and whether her psychological condition could become part of her legal defense. The evaluations do not determine guilt or innocence.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the children’s years of isolation, and additional charges have been indicated as the case moves toward the grand-jury stage.
