A summer evening in southwest Miami-Dade County ended in heartbreak after two separate water emergencies occurred at the same man-made lake within approximately one hour, leaving one family mourning the loss of a 14-year-old boy while another prays for their son’s recovery.

According to authorities, Marcus L. Sanders, a 14-year-old student at Homestead Middle School, was swimming with friends on the evening of June 27, 2026, near Northwest 12th Street and North Redland Road, just a short distance from his home.

At some point while in the water, Marcus went beneath the surface and did not resurface.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded immediately, deploying dive teams to search the lake. Divers eventually located Marcus underwater and brought him to shore. Despite lifesaving efforts by emergency responders and medical personnel, he was later pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at a local hospital.

As family and first responders were still coping with the tragedy, another emergency unfolded at the same lake.

Approximately one hour later, a second 14-year-old boy—who authorities say was not part of Marcus’s group—entered the water and nearly drowned. Emergency crews rescued the teen, who was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition, where he continues to receive treatment.

The two incidents have deeply shaken the local community, with many expressing sorrow over the devastating chain of events.
