When Loui was born, his parents, Karly and Luke Herriott, were filled with excitement. After months of imagining the moment they would finally meet their baby, they expected a joyful beginning.

Instead, within minutes of his arrival, their world changed.

Loui was born with significant differences in the development of his facial features. One ear had not formed normally, his eyes were misaligned, and his mouth appeared unusually wide. His parents were shocked and frightened, especially when Loui briefly stopped breathing and was rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit. 🏥💔

He needed oxygen and continuous monitoring to remain stable. Karly and Luke could not properly see or hold their newborn until the following day, when doctors explained that Loui had Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare genetic condition affecting the development of the facial bones and surrounding tissues.

The condition can affect the cheekbones, jaw, ears and eyes and, in more severe cases, can create serious difficulties with breathing and feeding.

Because Karly and Luke had not undergone a 4D ultrasound, they had no idea their baby might be facing such complex challenges. The diagnosis was an enormous shock.

But when Karly finally saw her son, she chose to look beyond his appearance.

She talked to him.

She stroked his hair.

She held onto the little boy she had waited so long to meet. ❤️

🏥 His First Days Were Filled With Challenges
Loui needed help breathing and could not initially feed normally. Because his mouth and throat were affected, doctors provided nutrition through a feeding tube.

His parents soon learned that this would be a long-term journey involving specialized care, therapies and multiple procedures.

The goal was never simply to change the way Loui looked.

It was to help him breathe, eat, hear, communicate and live as independently as possible.

His early surgeries focused on his most urgent medical needs, while later procedures addressed areas such as his jaw, ears and eyes.

Each operation brought uncertainty and recovery, but also another opportunity for Loui to move forward. 🌈

💙 A Little Boy With a Big Personality
Despite everything he had been through, Loui gradually began revealing his own personality.

He was curious.

Playful.

Affectionate.

Eager to interact with the people around him.

His parents worked hard to ensure that his childhood would be about more than hospitals and medical appointments. They encouraged him to play, explore and learn just like any other child.

Therapy also became an important part of his development. Because Treacher Collins syndrome can affect hearing, Loui received hearing support, while speech and communication therapies helped him find ways to express himself.

At home, even ordinary activities sometimes required adjustments. But Karly and Luke wanted Loui to experience childhood—not simply spend it undergoing treatment. 🧸✨

🌟 Every Small Milestone Became a Victory
For Loui’s parents, progress was measured differently.

A successful procedure was a victory.

A good feeding session was a victory.

A new sound was a victory.

A smile was a victory.

By around 19 months, Loui was interactive, playful and full of personality. His journey was far from over, but the little boy who had once been so fragile was continuing to grow and thrive.

His parents also connected with other families affected by Treacher Collins syndrome, finding support and understanding from people who knew what their journey felt like.

Through it all, they never saw Loui as simply a diagnosis.
