When Archie Gemmell was born in December 2020, his parents, Harata Gemmell and Cody, were expecting the beautiful, ordinary moments that come with welcoming a fourth child.

They imagined their newborn meeting his three older siblings.

Harata had already raised three children and had changed countless diapers. When she changed Archie for the first time, she immediately noticed that his waste was appearing in the wrong place.

“I had changed thousands of nappies in my time, but I had never seen anything like it,” Harata recalled.

Doctors examined the newborn and discovered a rare and serious congenital condition.

Archie had been born without an anus.

Instead of having the normal pathway for pᴀssing stool, he had an abnormal connection known as a urethral fistula, meaning waste was pᴀssing through his penis.

For his parents, the diagnosis was devastating.

Their baby had barely entered the world, yet he was already facing a major medical battle.

There was little time to process the shock.

Archie needed urgent treatment.

🏥 AN EIGHT-HOUR SURGERY

Only hours after his birth, Archie was transferred to another hospital.

Harata was still recovering from a C-section, but she and Cody traveled to be with their son.

By the time they arrived, Archie was already in surgery.

Doctors performed an eight-hour procedure to create a colostomy, providing a temporary way for waste to leave his body safely through an opening in his abdomen.

The operation was successful.

But seeing their newborn afterward was heartbreaking for his parents.

Instead of simply holding their baby and taking him home, they watched him surrounded by wires, tubes, and medical equipment.

Archie’s first days were nothing like the ones they had imagined.

After nine days in the hospital, however, there was finally a moment of joy.

His parents explained to the children that their baby brother had been very sick and that the small bag attached to his stomach was helping him stay alive.
