After three long years of infertility, Marci Shelman and Tristan Dederscheck believed their greatest dream had finally come true when they learned they were expecting a baby naturally.

“He was our miracle because we didn’t do any treatments to get him,” Marci shared. 💙👶

The couple from Blackfoot, Idaho, had been preparing to begin IVF when they received the joyful news that changed their lives. But midway through the pregnancy, their happiness was overshadowed by uncertainty.

During Marci’s 20-week ultrasound, doctors noticed unusual changes in their baby’s development and referred the family to specialists at the fetal center of Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City for close monitoring. 🏥

“The one thing that was always the same was his heart and his valves not functioning properly,” Marci recalled.

With every new scan, doctors discovered something different.

“One scan would show one problem, then it would disappear and something new would appear,” she said. “That’s why we named him Riot. We knew he was going to cause a riot from the very beginning.” 💛

On August 6, Riot arrived nearly seven weeks premature and was immediately admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Soon afterward, doctors diagnosed him with neonatal Marfan syndrome, an extremely rare and severe genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. The condition caused his heart valves to function improperly, leaving his enlarged heart struggling to pump oxygen-rich blood throughout his tiny body. It also placed tremendous pressure on his lungs, making every breath a challenge. 💔

“He can’t get the proper oxygen to his body,” Marci explained.

Despite the enormous obstacles, Riot fought with incredible strength.

For 91 days, he remained in the NICU surrounded by doctors, nurses, and his devoted parents. Finally, on November 6, the family celebrated the day they had dreamed about—they were able to bring their little boy home. 🏡✨

But their joy lasted only two days.

Riot suddenly became critically ill and was rushed back to the hospital.

On December 8, doctors gently told the family that every available treatment had been exhausted and encouraged them to begin discussing comfort care.

“They had tried everything,” Marci said. “I knew it was coming, but hearing those words and having to call his dad made it real.” 🕊️

Even during those heartbreaking days, Marci treasured every second she could spend with her son.

“I’ve been lucky because I’ve gotten to be here with him every day,” she said. “We’re hoping and praying, but we also have to be prepared.”

A short time later, Riot peacefully pᴀssed away in his mother’s loving arms, surrounded by his family. 💙

Announcing the heartbreaking news, Marci’s mother wrote:

“My grandson Riot pᴀssed peacefully on Tuesday morning. He was surrounded by love in my daughter’s arms.”

Although Riot’s life lasted only four months, the impact he left behind was immeasurable.

His obituary described him as a resilient, fearless little boy whose courage taught everyone around him the true meaning of unconditional love.

“Though he spent only a brief time with us, his life was deeply meaningful and forever cherished,” the family wrote. “He taught his parents how to love and never stop fighting.”

In just four short months, Riot filled countless hearts with love, hope, and unforgettable memories.

He will forever be remembered as the little miracle who proved that a life doesn’t have to be long to leave a lasting mark. 🌈💙🕊️
