A helpless dog was lying alone beside a busy Texas highway.

Unable to move.

And, according to investigators, left behind without the medical care he desperately needed.

What could have been the end of his story instead became the beginning of an incredible rescue.

🐾 Last week, two people were arrested in connection with an animal cruelty investigation after Lincoln, an eight-year-old dog, was found seriously injured along Interstate 35.

Authorities identified the suspects as Melissa Wood and Jacob Vincent II, who now face charges related to the alleged mistreatment of a non-livestock animal—a third-degree felony under Texas law.

The investigation began months earlier, when Bruceville-Eddy Police Chief Michael Dorsey responded to a 911 call reporting an injured dog lying in the grᴀssy median of the interstate.

As he approached, it became clear that Lincoln couldn’t come to him.

“I could immediately tell he was injured,” Dorsey recalled.

He gently picked the frightened dog up and carried him back to his patrol vehicle, giving Lincoln the first real chance at survival. 💙

When officers scanned Lincoln for a microchip, they discovered one that led them back to Lucky Lab Rescue, the organization that had adopted him out nearly eight years earlier.

The rescue team was stunned.

“We do extensive screening before every adoption,” volunteer Emily Vandermeer explained.

“We were shocked to learn he was one of our puppies.”

Lincoln was immediately brought back into their care.

The extent of his injuries was heartbreaking.

🩺 Veterinarians discovered two broken hips, a torn ligament in one of his front legs, and multiple internal injuries—trauma consistent with a serious vehicle accident.

Saving his life required extensive treatment.

His medical care ultimately exceeded $20,000.

Through community fundraisers and generous supporters, the rescue was able to provide every surgery, procedure, and rehabilitation service Lincoln needed.

While Lincoln slowly recovered, investigators worked to uncover what had happened.

Police quickly identified his owners.

According to the arrest affidavit, cellphone records reportedly placed them in the same area where Lincoln was found the night before he was discovered.

Investigators allege that after Lincoln was injured, his owners failed to seek veterinary treatment and instead abandoned him along the highway.

The two suspects are currently being held in the Collin County Jail.

If convicted, they could face two to ten years in prison, along with fines of up to $10,000.

⚖️ Chief Dorsey said cases like Lincoln’s serve as an important reminder that animals rely entirely on humans to protect them.

“Animals can’t speak for themselves,” he said.

“Someone has to seek justice on their behalf.”

After months of treatment, rehabilitation, and endless care from veterinarians and rescue volunteers, he made a remarkable recovery.

Today, the dog who once lay helpless in the grᴀss has found a loving forever home.

According to those who know him now, it’s hard to believe he’s the same animal they rescued.

“He’s still incredibly active for an eight-year-old dog,” Vandermeer shared.

“He’s loving, sweet, and honestly just a goofy, happy puppy.” 🐕✨
