When Bentley Erickson came into the world prematurely at just 31 weeks, his parents quickly learned that their little boy was facing a long and complicated medical journey. 💔👶

Just five days after his birth, Bentley was transferred to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where he spent four months in the neonatal intensive care unit. 🏥💙

Doctors discovered that Bentley had several rare and serious conditions. He was born without his left ear and was diagnosed with Goldenhar syndrome, a rare disorder affecting the development of the face and skull. He also had esophageal atresia and a tracheoesophageal fistula, conditions that made it difficult for food to reach his stomach and increased the risk of serious complications. 💔

Bentley was also diagnosed with VACTERL ᴀssociation, chronic lung disease, hydrocephalus and a Chiari malformation, adding even more challenges to his already difficult beginning.

His first years were filled with hospital stays, procedures and moments of uncertainty.

By the time Bentley was four, he had undergone 10 surgeries. Doctors faced an especially difficult challenge when repairing his esophagus because the gap between the two sections was unusually long. Instead of repairing it in a single operation, surgeons used a staged approach to preserve Bentley’s own esophagus. 🏥🙏

But Bentley kept fighting. 💙

And as the years pᴀssed, his story slowly became less about hospital rooms and more about the things he loved.

He grew into a cheerful boy who enjoyed Hawkeye football, riding on the family pontoon boat, playing Xbox and spending time with his loved ones. His mother says Bentley has a special ability to light up every room he enters. 🌈🥹

Then, in 2023, Bentley experienced a moment his family would never forget.

At age 12, he was selected as an Iowa Hawkeyes Kid Captain for the team’s game against Minnesota. 🏈💙

After spending so much of his childhood inside the hospital, Bentley was suddenly standing on the football field at Kinnick Stadium, surrounded by thousands of cheering fans.

For his mother, the moment was deeply emotional.

She remembered all the years they had spent wondering whether Bentley would survive — and now, instead of seeing him fighting for his life in a hospital bed, she was watching him enjoy a day celebrating just how far he had come. 🥹💙

Bentley had become more than a child who survived extraordinary medical challenges.

He had become a symbol of strength, determination and hope. ✨

His journey reminds us that a diagnosis may shape the challenges someone faces, but it does not define who they are.

Goldenhar syndrome is part of Bentley’s story — but so are his laughter, his dreams, his love for football and the joy he brings to the people around him. 💙🌈
