Godzilla Awakens: Horned & Spiked African Dinosaur Like No Other Emerges from the Sands

Paleontologists have unveiled Godzillaceratops spinifer — a spectacular horned and heavily spiked armored dinosaur from Late Cretaceous Africa that looks strikingly like a real-life Godzilla.

Described in a July 2026 Nature paper, the 75-million-year-old fossils were recovered from the Dakhla Basin in Morocco by an international team led by Dr. Nour-Eddine Jalil of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris. The partial skeleton includes a robust skull with two prominent brow horns and a nasal horn, plus rows of tall, conical spikes along the neck, shoulders, and back — exactly the dorsal “Godzilla” silhouette long imagined but never documented in an African dinosaur.

At roughly 5–6 metres long and 2 tonnes, this ankylosaurid relative lived in a coastal floodplain alongside spinosaurs and тιтanosaurs. Its extreme ornamentation likely served dual roles in defence against predators and visual display for mating. The combination of ceratopsian-style horns with ankylosaur-style spikes is unprecedented, suggesting convergent evolution or a previously unknown Gondwanan lineage.

Jalil called the specimen “a living myth — the closest thing we have to a real Godzilla.” The discovery proves Africa hosted far more flamboyant armored dinosaurs than previously known and forces a major rethink of how these defensive structures evolved across the southern continents.

Casts are already touring museums worldwide, and the holotype will be permanently displayed in Rabat. Godzillaceratops spinifer proves the Cretaceous Sahara was home to monsters every bit as spectacular and terrifying as their cinematic namesake.
