For nearly two years, Jill Richards and her family held onto one beautiful dream — seeing their daughters resting peacefully in separate beds.

On January 13, that long-awaited moment finally became a reality.

Conjoined twin sisters Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth Richards were successfully separated during a highly complex seven-hour surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital, marking the beginning of a brand-new chapter in their extraordinary lives.

“We’ve thought about and prayed for this day for almost two years,” Jill shared before the operation.

Just hours later, those prayers had been answered.

“It’s an indescribable feeling to see our girls lying in two separate beds,” she said. “We couldn’t be more grateful to the incredible team at Texas Children’s for making this dream come true.”

Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth were born on December 29 via Cesarean section at 35 weeks of pregnancy. Together, the sisters weighed just 9 pounds, 12 ounces.

The twins were joined at the chest and abdomen and shared a major blood vessel connected to their hearts, making their condition exceptionally rare and medically complex. Because of this, surgeons spent months carefully planning every stage of the separation.

Preparation for the life-changing operation began long before the surgery itself.

On November 6, the girls underwent a preliminary procedure to place tissue expanders beneath their skin. Over time, the expanders gradually stretched healthy skin, providing enough tissue for surgeons to safely close each child’s chest and abdomen after separation.

When surgery day finally arrived, nearly 75 medical specialists came together in a carefully coordinated effort. Surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, nurses, and experts from eight different specialties each played a vital role in the operation.

After seven intense hours in the operating room, the team achieved the outcome everyone had worked so tirelessly to accomplish.

“The success of this incredibly complex surgery reflects the dedication and commitment of our entire team over the past year,” said Dr. Larry Hollier, Surgeon-in-Chief and Chief of Plastic Surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital.

“Through repeated simulations and extensive planning, we prepared for every possible scenario. We are thrilled with the outcome and look forward to supporting Anna and Hope throughout their recovery.”

For Jill and her family, the achievement meant far more than a successful operation.

It meant witnessing something they had imagined for so long—seeing each daughter peacefully resting in her own bed for the very first time.
