Wisconsin continues to remember Prince McCree, a bright and joyful five-year-old whose life ended in October 2023 under circumstances that shocked his family and community.

Prince was described by his parents and those who knew him as energetic, loving, curious, and full of personality. He was a little boy with an entire childhood ahead of him.

On October 25, 2023, Prince had stayed home from school because he was experiencing a sore throat.

According to investigators and court documents, he was in the basement of the home where he lived with his mother, Jordan Barger, while in the care of 15-year-old Erik Mendoza and 29-year-old David Pietura.

What happened that day would leave his family carrying an unimaginable loss.

Authorities said Prince suffered severe injuries. Investigators later discovered his remains concealed at the property after his mother reported him missing and began demanding answers.

Initially, authorities were given an explanation that Prince and Mendoza had simply been “roughhousing.” Investigators say evidence gathered during the investigation contradicted that account.

Cellphone information, neighborhood surveillance, forensic evidence, and other investigative work helped detectives reconstruct what had happened.

A K-9 unit eventually detected evidence indicating that human remains were present at the property, leading authorities to conduct a more extensive search.

Prince was then found.

Investigators also obtained surveillance footage that prosecutors said helped establish the involvement of Mendoza and Pietura.

Mendoza later made statements to investigators regarding his role in Prince’s death. Pietura also acknowledged his involvement, according to court records.

The case eventually reached sentencing, where Prince’s father, Darron McCree, faced one of the most painful moments imaginable.

Because of previous courtroom outbursts, Darron addressed Mendoza from behind a protective glᴀss barrier.

His words reflected the overwhelming grief and anger of a father who had lost his five-year-old son. 💔

For Darron and Prince’s family, the courtroom was never simply about punishment.
