During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chelsea D. created a Zoom fitness group to help mothers stay motivated and support one another. Among the women who joined was Lindsay Clancy, someone Chelsea had known from middle school cheerleading.

Chelsea remembered Lindsay as kind, thoughtful, and caring. Although they had not seen each other in more than a decade, she was happy to reconnect. At the time, Lindsay was expecting her third child and quickly became one of the group’s most dedicated members, rarely missing a workout—even during the final months of her pregnancy. Her two older children would often appear on camera, happily joining in alongside their mother.

“She was an inspiration,” Chelsea recalled.

After welcoming her third son, Callan, in May 2022, Lindsay gradually stopped participating in the group. Chelsea ᴀssumed she was simply adjusting to life with a newborn and two toddlers.

Then, everything changed.

On January 24, 2023, authorities say Lindsay Clancy, a 33-year-old labor and delivery nurse from Duxbury, Mᴀssachusetts, asked her husband, Patrick, to run a quick errand. While he was away, prosecutors allege she fatally strangled their three children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan—before attempting to take her own life.

Patrick returned home to a devastating scene. Cora and Dawson were pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the hospital. Callan was placed on life support but pᴀssed away several days later after doctors determined he had no brain activity.

The heartbreaking case quickly captured national attention, and in the years since, two very different narratives have emerged.

One view portrays Lindsay as a mother who deliberately planned and carried out the killings. The other argues that she was suffering from a severe psychiatric crisis that overwhelmed her ability to think rationally.

Many of Lindsay’s lifelong friends strongly support the second explanation.

Those who knew her throughout childhood and adulthood describe her as compᴀssionate, intelligent, and deeply devoted to caring for others. She excelled academically, participated in numerous school activities, and often spoke about her dream of becoming both a nurse and a mother.

“Taking care of people just came naturally to her,” one longtime friend said.

Friends remember countless acts of kindness, from quietly helping classmates who were struggling to offering reᴀssurance whenever new mothers needed advice. After graduating from Quinnipiac University with a biology degree, Lindsay became a labor and delivery nurse at Mᴀssachusetts General Hospital—a career many say perfectly matched her nurturing personality.

She married Patrick, and together they welcomed three children over the next several years. Friends described her as a loving and attentive mother who often became the first person they contacted when they needed parenting guidance.

However, after the birth of Callan in 2022, Lindsay reportedly began experiencing serious mental health struggles.

Court records indicate she sought psychiatric treatment repeatedly in the months leading up to the tragedy. She was prescribed multiple medications, consulted numerous specialists, and was even admitted to an inpatient psychiatric program. Personal journal entries described severe insomnia, depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and suicidal ideation, while prosecutors also allege she researched disturbing topics online.

Despite receiving extensive medical care, her condition remained difficult to diagnose and treat. According to court documents, one postpartum mental health clinic reportedly concluded that she did not meet the criteria for postpartum depression, even as her symptoms appeared to worsen.

Just weeks before the tragedy, Lindsay voluntarily admitted herself to McLean Hospital for psychiatric treatment before being discharged home.

Only days later, the deaths of her three children shocked the nation.

In February 2023, Lindsay was formally charged with three counts of murder. Prosecutors argue the killings were carefully planned and are pursuing the case as premeditated murder.

Her defense team presents a very different argument, maintaining that Lindsay experienced a catastrophic mental health crisis after childbirth and had desperately sought professional help numerous times before the incident.

According to defense attorney Kevin Reddington, Lindsay consulted mental health professionals 19 times in the months before the tragedy, arguing that both she and her children became victims of a system that failed to provide effective treatment.

Chelsea, along with several of Lindsay’s closest friends, continues to believe that the woman they knew would never have harmed her children if she had been mentally well.

“I don’t know why Lindsay did what happened,” Chelsea said. “But from knowing her, I truly believe she was not herself.”

Years later, the case remains one of the most heartbreaking and widely debated criminal cases involving maternal mental health, with questions continuing about where responsibility ends, where severe mental illness begins, and whether earlier intervention could have changed the outcome.
