For Erin Jenkins, what began as an ordinary September morning quickly became a terrifying fight for survival.

The 33-year-old Chicago mother was preparing to take her daughter to school when she was allegedly attacked outside her home in the city’s Bronzeville neighborhood. The shooting happened around 7:51 a.m. on September 3 near South Lake Park Avenue and 40th Place.

According to police and Jenkins, a man approached in a black sedan, stepped out, and opened fire before leaving the area.

Erin was struck multiple times, suffering gunsh!t wounds to her chest and arm. She was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and has since undergone two surgeries.

But perhaps the most heartbreaking part of the morning was that her daughter was nearby.

As bullets struck around them, Erin said she feared she would not survive. Her first instinct was to protect her child. She told her daughter to get down and run.

The young girl later returned while police were on the phone. In a desperate effort to help her mother, she used her school sweater to apply pressure and help stop the bleeding. 💔

Erin is now recovering from her injuries, but the emotional impact of the attack remains.

She believes she may have been the victim of mistaken idenтιтy, though authorities have not publicly confirmed that theory. Police have not announced an arrest or a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
