ORLANDO, Florida — Nearly two decades after the disappearance of Caylee Marie Anthony, the little girl at the center of one of America’s most closely watched true-crime cases would have celebrated her 21st birthday today.

Caylee was born on August 9, 2005. She lived in Orlando with her mother, Casey Anthony, and her maternal grandparents, George and Cindy Anthony.

In June 2008, Caylee was last seen alive. Her disappearance was not reported to authorities for approximately a month. On July 15, 2008, Cindy Anthony contacted police and reported that she had not seen her granddaughter for weeks.

The case quickly attracted national attention as investigators examined Casey Anthony’s changing accounts about what had happened to her daughter. Casey initially told authorities that Caylee had been left with a nanny named “Zanny.” Investigators later determined that the location where Casey claimed Caylee had been left was vacant and could not substantiate the nanny story.

The investigation also examined Casey’s claims about her employment and evidence connected to the family’s home and Casey’s vehicle. Prosecutors later presented forensic evidence involving an alleged odor of decomposition and other disputed evidence during the trial.
