In one of the most extraordinary displays of community support, thousands of people once stood in the rain for a little boy they had never met, hoping that one of them might be able to help save his life.

That boy was Oscar Saxelby-Lee, a young British child whose life changed dramatically after he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018.

Doctors told Oscar’s family they had only about three months to find a suitable stem cell donor. Faced with an urgent race against time, his school, Pitmaston Primary School in Worcester, decided it could not simply stand by.

The school organized a donor registration drive, hoping to find someone who might be a match for Oscar.

What happened next was extraordinary.

A huge crowd turned up.

Despite the rain, 4,855 people lined up to register as potential stem cell donors. 🌧️❤️ The turnout was so large that it broke the previous DKMS record for a single donor registration event, which had involved 2,200 people.

Most of those people had never met Oscar.

Yet they were willing to spend hours standing in difficult weather simply for the possibility that they could help a child in need.

Eventually, hope arrived from Germany.

A suitable donor was found, allowing Oscar to receive the stem cell transplant his family had desperately been hoping for. 🇩🇪🙏

In 2019, Oscar’s leukemia returned, creating another devastating challenge for his family. His treatment options became increasingly difficult, and his family once again found themselves fighting against time.

And once again, the community refused to give up.

People rallied together and raised more than £500,000 to help fund treatment in Singapore. The extraordinary fundraising effort gave Oscar another opportunity to receive the care he needed. ❤️‍🩹

Then, in January 2020, Oscar’s mother shared news that brought hope to everyone who had followed his story.

Doctors had found no signs of leukemia. 🥹✨
