Jiang Yanchen grew up knowing that his body could not do what most people took for granted.

Diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis as a child, his spine gradually became severely deformed. As the years pᴀssed, his upper body folded forward until his head and lower back were barely a hand’s width apart.

By his teenage years, even lying down or sitting normally had become almost impossible. His lung capacity had fallen dramatically, and something as simple as eating or breathing could become exhausting.

His folded height was only around 80 centimeters.

But somehow, his dreams remained much bigger than his body.

In 2022, Jiang faced one of China’s most demanding college entrance examinations — while lying on a yoga mat.

He didn’t let his condition decide whether he deserved an education.

He earned a place at university to study Energy and Power Engineering and even ranked first in mathematics in his class.

Then, at 21, Jiang traveled to Chengdu to meet orthopedic surgeon Dr. Liang Yijian.

The surgery would be extraordinarily complicated.

Over the next two years, Jiang underwent four major operations as doctors worked to gradually reconstruct and realign his severely deformed spine, neck and hips.

But the operations were only part of the journey.

Between surgeries, Jiang spent around six hours every day in rehabilitation.

He had to teach his body something it had almost forgotten how to do.

Stand.

Step by step.

Day after day.

Until finally, the moment he had dreamed about for most of his life arrived.

Jiang stood upright.

For the first time, he could look at the world from a completely different position.

And perhaps even more importantly, he could finally look at himself and see the possibility of a life he had spent years imagining.

Millions of people watched the moment online.

Jiang later said that seeing himself look more like an ordinary person made him feel “reborn.”

Doctors also reported that his heart and lung function had returned to normal levels after the treatment.

Think about that for a moment.

A young man who once had to take an entrance examination lying on a mat eventually stood tall after years of pain, surgery and rehabilitation.

He didn’t simply straighten his spine.

He reclaimed something he had been denied for much of his life — the chance to stand, look forward and imagine what comes next.

His story isn’t about becoming someone else.

It’s about finally being able to live more of the life he had always wanted.

And sometimes, the greatest victory isn’t winning a race or reaching the top.
