When 11-month-old Alba Moss developed a high fever in early 2019, her parents initially believed their baby was dealing with an ordinary childhood illness.

But within days, her condition became frighteningly severe.

Her temperature climbed above 107°F (nearly 42°C). She became weak and swollen, her eyes were so inflamed that they remained closed for four days, and she struggled to breathe.

At one point, Alba became almost completely unresponsive.

Because she was only 11 months old, Alba had not yet reached the age for her first routine MMR vaccination.

Her parents, Jilly and Richard Moss, initially took her to hospital when her temperature became dangerously high. She was initially treated for what doctors believed was viral tonsillitis and sent home.

But Alba continued to deteriorate.

A rash appeared, her eyes became increasingly red and swollen, and her condition rapidly worsened.

After she was admitted to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, doctors finally confirmed what was happening:

Alba had measles.

Her recovery would take days of intensive medical care.

She required oxygen, intravenous fluids, tube feeding and vitamin A, which doctors may use in children with measles to help reduce the risk of serious complications. She also received treatment for secondary infections and was closely monitored throughout her hospital stay.

Alba spent eight days in the hospital fighting the infection.

For her mother, watching her baby suffer was devastating.

Jilly later described how frightening it was to see her daughter with her eyes swollen shut and struggling through a prolonged fever. At one point, the family feared they might lose their little girl. 💔

Thankfully, Alba eventually recovered.

But her experience changed her family forever.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis and vision or hearing problems. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening, particularly for vulnerable young children.

Jilly shared pH๏τographs of Alba’s illness to help other parents understand that measles can be far more serious than a simple childhood rash.

Her message also highlighted an important reality for families with very young babies: infants who are not yet old enough for routine vaccination can depend on high vaccination coverage in their communities for additional protection.

That protection is often described as community immunity.

For the Moss family, Alba’s recovery became more than a story about one frightening illness.

It became a reminder of how quickly a serious infection can change a family’s life — and why protecting vulnerable children matters. 💕👶
