For four years, Arturo and Bernardo Lima shared something no child should ever have to face — they were joined at the head.

Born as craniopagus twins, the brothers had a complex connection involving their skulls and blood vessels. Separating them would require extraordinary precision, courage, and years of preparation.

For their family, the dream was simple: to give each boy the chance to grow up as his own person. ❤️

Doctors knew the operation would be incredibly dangerous. The twins had been diagnosed before birth, and detailed imaging revealed just how complicated their shared anatomy was. One of the boys also had a heart defect, adding another layer of risk.

Still, their parents believed in them.

A team of specialists eventually took on the challenge, led by Brazilian neurosurgeon Dr. Gabriel Mufarrej and working alongside renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Noor ul Owase Jeelani.

The original plan called for four surgeries.

Instead, the medical team ultimately performed seven separate operations to gradually prepare the boys for their final separation. 🏥✨

The doctors relied on advanced imaging and three-dimensional models to understand the boys’ brains, blood vessels and shared structures. The operation demanded not only surgical skill, but patience, teamwork and the ability to make difficult decisions along the way.

Arturo and Bernardo were separated at four years old.

Their successful separation made medical history — they became the oldest craniopagus twins to undergo separation and survive. 🙏💙
