A simple cheek swab connected two strangers living thousands of miles apart.

Three years later, one of them was walking down the aisle at the other’s wedding. ❤️

In 2015, college student Hayden Hatfield registered with Be The Match while attending Auburn University, hoping to become a potential bone marrow donor. She never expected that she would actually receive a call saying she was a match.

Almost a year later, that call came.

Hayden had matched with an anonymous one-year-old girl in California who was battling juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia, a rare and aggressive childhood blood cancer.

Her name was Skye Savren-McCormick.

Skye had been diagnosed just four days before her first birthday. On July 29, 2016, Hayden donated her bone marrow to the little girl.

But Skye’s journey was far from over. She experienced serious complications and eventually needed additional treatment and another transplant. Her family later said Hayden’s donation helped Skye survive long enough to reach that next stage of treatment.

For the first year, donor and recipient had to remain anonymous.

Eventually, Hayden reached out to Skye’s family through Be The Match. Messages turned into phone calls, and the two families began exchanging pH๏τos, gifts and updates between California and Alabama.

Then Skye turned three.

Inside a birthday package from Hayden was something completely unexpected — an invitation to her upcoming wedding.

Hayden wanted Skye to be her flower girl. 🌸

Skye’s doctors eventually cleared her to travel, allowing the little girl and her parents to make the trip to Alabama.

At the wedding rehearsal, Hayden saw Skye in person for the very first time.

She later recalled walking toward the little girl and immediately dropping to her knees, overwhelmed by the moment. And Skye recognized her too, calling her by the nickname she already knew:

“Hay-Hay.” 🥹

Then, on June 9, 2018, three-year-old Skye walked down the aisle as Hayden Hatfield Ryals’ flower girl.

The little girl who had once been an anonymous match on a donor registry was now standing beside the woman whose donation had helped carry her through one of the hardest chapters of her young life.

What began with a simple cheek swab had become something neither family could have imagined — two families, once thousands of miles apart, becoming part of each other’s lives. ❤️
